The other day, I was talking with my sister-in-law about mosquitoes. She lives not far from a lake, and if you’ve ever lived near water, you know exactly what that means. Beautiful scenery often comes with one major drawback: mosquitoes.
During the summer months, they can be relentless.
As we chatted, she shared a natural mosquito repellent that has become a must-have in her household. The formula is surprisingly simple:
- 2 tablespoons (30 ml) ethanol (or high-proof grain alcohol)
- 1 tablespoon (15 ml) Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus
- 1 cup (240 ml) distilled water
For areas with heavy mosquito activity:
- 2 tablespoons (30 ml) Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus
- ¼ cup (60 ml) ethanol
- 1 cup (240 ml) distilled water
Mixed together and sprayed on, she says it has made a remarkable difference.
“We live in Virginia, which is basically a swampy, humid, mosquito-breeding steam room in the summer,” she told me. “The mosquitoes are awful. My kids love being outside, both at daycare and at home, but they were getting eaten alive.”
She explained that one of her children reacts badly to mosquito bites, often developing swelling and irritation. After trying different products, she finally found something that worked.
“My kids’ skin doesn’t lie. This stuff worked shockingly well.” Every morning before daycare, she sprays it on the kids before they head outside.
“They spend a lot of time outdoors on the playground. We apply it in the morning, and it lasts all the way through pickup. If they want to play outside again after we get home, we just reapply once and they’re protected for the rest of the evening.”
The difference, according to her, has been dramatic. “It’s like night and day. When my son has it on, he can play outside happily without constantly swatting mosquitoes.”
What really made me smile was when she admitted that mosquitoes seem to target her, too. “I’m a mosquito magnet, and I didn’t get a single bite! This stuff works so well that I had to buy it for myself.”
Another thing she loves is that it doesn’t feel like a harsh chemical spray. “It smells nice, and it’s natural, so I don’t feel the need to wash it off the moment I come inside.”
Listening to her experience reminded me how many families are searching for natural alternatives to conventional bug sprays, especially when children spend so much time outdoors.
